Traffic-Induced Ground Vibration

ABOUTUS

Every passing train and heavy truck sends vibration into the ground — and into the buildings nearby. Measure what actually reaches a resident's floor or a lab's optical bench, not just what leaves the source.

  • VLeq,T

The time-averaged vibration level typically used to characterize exposure over a monitoring period, not a single pass-by event

  • VL5–VL95

Percentile levels that describe how often a given vibration level was exceeded — key to separating background from event-driven vibration

  • 2

Distinct concerns to evaluate separately — human perception and annoyance, and the far lower thresholds that apply to sensitive equipment or heritage structures

The Complaint Starts at the Foundation, Not the Track

Rail traffic, heavy road vehicles and nearby construction all inject vibration into the ground, which travels through the soil and into the foundations of surrounding buildings. What a resident feels in their living room, or what a sensitive instrument in a lab picks up, depends far more on the building's foundation, floor and distance from the source than on how strong the vibration was at the track or road itself.

That's why ground-borne vibration assessment is done with human-response instrumentation — reporting the statistical spread of vibration levels over a monitoring period (percentiles, VLeq) rather than a single peak reading — and, where the receiver is a hospital, lab or heritage building rather than a resident, against a far stricter threshold.

Aihua's environmental vibration analyzer and general-purpose vibration meters together cover both the community-impact assessment and the building-level spot-checks that go with it.

  •           Step 1 Calibrate

Verify sensor sensitivity against a vibration calibrator before the session, so every subsequent reading is traceable.

  •                   Step 2 Position at the Receiver

Mount at the building's foundation or the floor of the affected space — not at the track or road — since that's where the assessment applies.
  •             Step 3 Re-Measure & Trend

Repeat on a fixed interval, switching parameter as needed, and watch for a rising trend rather than reacting to one reading.

                   Step 4 Diagnose & Schedule

Once a trend is confirmed, use spectrum analysis to identify the likely fault and schedule the repair before it becomes a failure.

  • 1. Why measure at the building instead of at the track or road?

  • 2.Why does AWA6257A report percentiles instead of a single number?

  • 3. When do I need YT3001B instead of YT3001A?

  • 4.Are residential comfort and equipment-sensitivity criteria the same?
