The Calibrator Becomes the Product Spec

In field calibration, a calibrator checks one meter, occasionally. On a sensor production line, the relationship reverses: the calibrator becomes the reference every unit is measured against, potentially thousands of times a month. Its own accuracy doesn't just confirm a reading — it directly sets the sensitivity tolerance every shipped sensor is held to.

That makes two things non-negotiable for a manufacturing QC line: a reference accurate enough for the tolerance you're selling to, and a check fast and repeatable enough not to become the bottleneck on the line.

Setting Up a Sensor QC Checkpoint

Step 1 Match Reference to Sensor

Choose the calibrator type and class based on the sensor family and the sensitivity tolerance being shipped.
Step 2 Fixture the Unit

Mount or couple each sensor to the calibrator consistently, so every reading in the batch is taken the same way.
Step 3 Check Against Tolerance

Compare each unit's reading to the reference and the shipping tolerance, logging a pass or fail per serial number.
Step 4 Recertify the Reference

Send the calibrator for periodic lab recertification on its own schedule, independent of any single production run.

Common Questions About Sensor Production QC
1. How is this different from field calibration of a finished meter?

Field calibration checks one meter occasionally, against readings that are already in production use. Factory inspection uses the calibrator as a repeated reference for every unit coming off the line — its accuracy and repeatability directly determine the sensitivity tolerance you can promise on your datasheet.
2. Why does the calibrator's own accuracy matter more here than in field use?

Because every sensor you ship inherits its accuracy from this one reference. If the calibrator itself is only accurate to a certain tolerance, no sensor checked against it can honestly be specified tighter than that — the reference sets the ceiling for the whole product line.
3. Do I need a Class 1 sound calibrator, or is Class 2 enough for production QC?

It depends on the sensitivity tolerance you're shipping to. If your microphones are specified to a tight tolerance, the reference needs Class 1 accuracy to actually support that claim. For general-purpose products with looser tolerances, Class 2 is a more cost-effective reference.
4. Which vibration calibrator fits a high-throughput line — ACE5003 or AWA6071A?

ACE5003 is compact and single-level, which usually makes it faster for a high-volume pass/fail checkpoint. AWA6071A's dual-level output is worth the extra step when you also need to verify linearity across the sensor's range, or when the line handles both small and larger environmental-type sensors.
