Construction Site Noise
ABOUTUS
85 dBA
OSHA / NIOSH action level for an 8-hour occupational exposure
100–120 dB
Typical peak level from a jackhammer or pile driver at the operator's position
50–60 dB(A)
Common local ordinance limit at the site boundary during daytime hours
Noise Is a Built-In Hazard on Every Job Site

Excavators, jackhammers, concrete saws, generators and pile drivers routinely push sound levels well past the point where hearing damage occurs — often without workers noticing until the exposure has already accumulated over a shift.
Regulators treat construction noise as both an occupational health issue (protecting the crew) and an environmental compliance issue (protecting neighbors, schools and hospitals near the perimeter). Contractors are increasingly required to log both.
Aihua Instruments supplies the sound level meters, personal noise dosimeters and outdoor monitoring stations used to satisfy both requirements — rugged enough for a working site, accurate enough for a compliance report.
Three Places Noise Needs to Be Measured
A complete construction noise program covers the worker, the equipment, and the neighborhood — each measured at a different point, against a different standard.
-
Personal Worker Exposure
Clip-on noise dosimeters track an individual worker's full-shift exposure (LEX,8h), flagging when they cross the 85 dBA action level so hearing protection and rotation schedules can be enforced.

Equipment & Source Testing
Handheld sound level meters characterize individual machines — excavators, compressors, saws — to compare against equipment noise limits or select quieter alternatives before they're deployed.

Site Boundary & Community MonitoringPeriodic spot-check surveys with a portable sound level meter at the site perimeter document compliance with local ordinance limits and give you a defensible answer to neighbor complaints.

Common Questions About Construction Noise Measurement
-
1.Do I need a dosimeter or a sound level meter?
Use a dosimeter when you need one worker's full-shift exposure (LEX,8h) as they move around the site. Use a handheld sound level meter when you need a spot reading at a fixed point — a machine, a work zone, or the site boundary. Many programs use both: dosimeters for the crew, a meter for everything else. -
2. How often does the instrument need to be calibrated?
Field-calibrate with an acoustic calibrator immediately before and after every measurement session — this only takes a minute and protects the whole data set from an undetected drift. Beyond that, most meters and calibrators also need a full laboratory calibration on a periodic cycle (commonly every 1–2 years); check the certificate that shipped with your instrument for the exact interval. -
3. Is a Class 2 sound level meter accurate enough for a construction site?
For general-purpose work — checking machinery, work-zone levels, and most occupational exposure surveys — a Class 2 meter is accurate enough and is what most site teams use. Class 1 becomes necessary when a specific regulation calls for it, or for precise low-level environmental measurements and narrowband frequency analysis. -
4. What noise level triggers hearing protection requirements?
85 dBA as an 8-hour time-weighted average is the commonly referenced action level (OSHA/NIOSH) at which hearing conservation measures — protection, monitoring, rotation — are expected to start. Many single pieces of construction equipment exceed this on their own, so protection is often required well before a full shift is logged.
