Microphone Windscreen for Noise Sound Level Meter

Outdoor noise measurements are frequently affected by wind noise interference. When wind blows across the microphone, it generates turbulent eddies near the diaphragm, causing the diaphragm to vibrate and produce additional, unwanted noise signals. The magnitude of wind noise depends on wind speed and direction — higher wind speeds produce greater wind noise, while wind blowing parallel to the diaphragm produces slightly less.

A simple and effective way to reduce wind noise is to fit a windscreen over the microphone (and preamplifier/sound level meter). The windscreen is made of specially treated open-cell polyurethane foam. Under typical acceptable outdoor testing conditions (wind speeds from 0 m/s to 6 m/s), it attenuates wind noise by 10 dB to 12 dB.
