Advanced diagnostic and calibration units engineered for extreme acoustic environments
Aerospace vehicles operate under some of the most severe dynamic environments known to engineering. During liftoff, atmospheric ascent, and supersonic reentry, rocket engines and aerodynamic turbulence generate extreme fluctuating pressure fields. These acoustic loads, which can exceed 180 decibels (dB), act as powerful mechanical forces. The acoustic energy directly transfers into structural vibrations, exposing fuselage panels, payload fairings, and delicate electronics to high-intensity stress. To ensure mission success and structural integrity, modern aerospace testing relies heavily on specialized acoustic dosimeters for aerospace structural vibration and acoustic testing.
Vibro-acoustics describes the phenomenon where acoustic energy excites structural modes, causing severe vibration. Traditional vibration testing uses accelerometers, but these sensors only measure structural response. An acoustic dosimeter measures the actual excitation source—the cumulative sound pressure levels (SPL) and localized noise dose over time. By combining acoustic dosimetry with structural vibration data, aerospace engineers can map the exact transfer functions between acoustic excitation and structural stress.
The global aerospace industry is undergoing a massive paradigm shift. The rise of commercial spaceflight, reusable launch vehicles (RLVs), and urban air mobility (UAM) such as electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has created unprecedented demand for rapid, highly accurate vibro-acoustic testing. Historically, acoustic testing was reserved for major government-funded space programs. Today, private enterprises launch hundreds of satellites annually, each requiring rigorous qualification testing inside reverberant acoustic chambers and progressive wave tubes.
Furthermore, the push toward lightweight composite materials in aircraft and rocket fairings exacerbates acoustic vulnerability. Composites offer excellent strength-to-weight ratios but tend to transmit and respond to high-frequency acoustic loads differently than traditional aluminum alloys. Consequently, modern testing protocols require multi-channel acoustic dosimeters capable of capturing wide-bandwidth, high-dynamic-range sound fields under extreme thermal and pressure conditions.
Before a satellite is launched, it must survive the acoustic environment inside the rocket's payload fairing. During the first two minutes of flight, the combination of rocket motor exhaust noise and transonic aerodynamic buffeting creates a chaotic acoustic field. In testing facilities, engineers simulate this environment using massive reverberant chambers filled with nitrogen or compressed air driven by acoustic modulators. Acoustic dosimeters are placed at critical zones around and inside the payload simulator to monitor the spatial distribution of acoustic energy. The dosimeter's data ensures that the acoustic dose does not exceed the structural limits of the payload's sensitive optical and electronic components.
Acoustic fatigue occurs when high-intensity sound waves cause repeated bending stress in thin-walled structures, leading to micro-cracking and eventual structural failure. This is particularly critical near rocket nozzles and engine nacelles. Engineers use acoustic dosimeters alongside dynamic strain gauges to monitor how structures respond to continuous, high-amplitude noise. By correlating the cumulative noise dose with structural degradation, researchers can predict the fatigue life of materials and validate structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithms.
Astronauts and flight crews are subjected to continuous noise from life support systems, cooling fans, and thruster firings. Prolonged exposure to these sounds can lead to temporary or permanent hearing loss, cognitive fatigue, and communication issues. Wearable noise exposure dosimeters, such as the AWA5920, are utilized to monitor the cumulative noise dose received by crew members over extended missions. These lightweight, wearable devices must meet strict outgassing and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards to operate safely in microgravity environments.
